Summer is wonderful:  more sun, gardening, outdoor activities and fun.   

Don't forget the sunscreen!!  Use an SPF of 30 or higher if possible.  Make sure your sunscreen is 'fresh' - buy a new bottle every year.  MOST IMPORTANTLY:  when you are out in the sun it is vital that you apply sunscreen well and often!  Especially if you are sweating or in/out of water.

If you are unable to wear sunscreen make sure your skin is covered with SPF-rated fabric and wear a wide brimmed hat (baseball caps don't protect well).  

Finally, protect your eyes!  UVA/UVB-rated sunglasses are affordable, but you need to have them on.  If you have corrected vision, you can get corrected sunglasses, use "clip-on" sun covers for your frames OR purchase a sun-blocking item that goes over your regular glasses (they're not attractive, but they're better than being blind from sun damage).

Check your sun exposed skin regularly and report any suspicious new 'spots' so  they can be exam...

There is an epidemic of NASH:  Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, a.k.a Fatty Liver Disease.  It now causes more case of Cirrhosis of the Liver than are cased by hepatitis-B or C.  This is serious business, and we need to take it seriously!  If your liver enzymes (AST and ALT) are even slightly elevated, YOU are at risk.

What can you do?  First, see your doctor and get your liver enzymes checked:  yearly if you're generally healthy, and more often if you are overweight, obese, have diabetes, a poor diet or do not exercise.

How can you prevent Fatty Liver Disease?  Keep your diet healthy (ask how), keep your hemoglobin A11C (HbA1C) below 5.7%, keep your fasting insulin level below 10, keep your triglyceride level below 150, get 20+ min of non-stop activity every day, keep your body mass index below 28.   Problems with that?  Call me.

Mimi is home from Italy, so I've learned how to update/add to my blog.  

Expect more now that I've been "schooled."  

Tid bits for the season:

~ Don't over-do on the holiday baking

~ Try making some family-favorites into 'healthy' family favorites

~ Say NO when necessary;   don't over-work yourself during the holidays to the point of misery.  Just say no when you need a break........

~ Move!  22+ min of walking/activity/exercise every day

~ Find at least 2 things that bring you joy, every day between now and the New Year.
